Music is highly valued at school and permeates many aspects of the curriculum. The children celebrate music through classroom teaching, assemblies, worship, musical performances, and extra curricular activities. The school’s overall aim is to recognise that music is fun and enjoyable and children are introduced to music from a wide range of well-known composers.

In Reception children have access to percussion instruments during their independent outdoor activities and play along to and sing familiar nursery rhymes. The children also begin to learn how to copy and make up a simple rhythm and they explore how the sounds of instruments can be changed. They build up a repertoire of songs.

In Key Stage 1 the music curriculum is linked in with the topic that the children are learning about. They learn some simple chants and rhymes and use instruments to create sound effects and compose their own music. They use a variety of music as part of the dance lessons to help them to learn about the tempo and use of sound effects in the music.

This year Key Stage 2 are also having peripatetic music tuition for the ukelele. They develop knowledge, skills and understanding through listening to, performing, creating and responding to music.

In previous years children have taken part in musical performances at the Palace Theatre Redditch and The Symphony Hall in Birmingham.
